Tips for sustainable living
“Sustainable living describes a lifestyle that focuses on the use of natural resources and by taking people and the environment into account. It is also called 'living on earth in harmony'.” – Wikipedia.
Okay, thanks Wikipedia, but what does that mean exactly? Should everyone cover their roof with solar panels or go for a minimalist interior and have almost no furniture or decoration in their home? It is very difficult to indicate what exactly 'sustainable' is. Especially because sustainability means something different to everyone. But that is what makes upcycling so beautiful, we think! That is why we have listed a number of tips and tops for inspiration.
#1 Upcycle, upcycle, upcycle
Upcycling is transforming products and waste materials into new products. It often involves old and 'unusable' materials and sometimes requires some creativity. As a child, you may have done this yourself, for example by using old toilet rolls for crafts or by making a fort with old boxes.
This way you can make new furniture from old wooden pallets or a candle holder from old drink bottles. A nice feeling to give your own old products a new life! If you are not that creative yourself, you can also take a look at these brands that all do upcycling on Looped Goods . Even the NS does upcycling! They make unique and surprising new products from used information signs and train upholstery.
#2 Eco sleeping
There are several ways to sleep environmentally friendly. For example, by turning off your heating when you go to sleep. It turns out that a colder room is not only better for the environment but also for ourselves! You fall asleep faster, burn more calories and you look younger when you wake up! This is because the hormone melatonin is produced when your body has cooled down (we are currently testing this ourselves?). Environmentally friendly is also possible under an organic cotton duvet, grown without toxic substances, or sleeping under a woolen blanket, for sale at Gr een Jump . And to top it all off, there are also sustainable bed frames. This way you can sleep on a sustainable bed frame made of cardboard, just like the athletes at the Olympic Games.
#3 Sustainable furniture
Furniture can be sustainable in different ways. It is important to ask yourself different things. What material is it made of, where does it come from, is it practical to use and does it last a long time? Of course you can also see if it is your style. Sustainable but especially very nice furniture is now made of various materials such as bamboo, old scaffolding material, cardboard and even seaweed !
#4 Eco-friendly accessories
Eco-friendly accessories are not always easy to find. You can make your home cozy and green by purchasing nice air-purifying houseplants such as the Calathea or the spoon plant. Fortunately, there are more and more (web) shops where you can buy nice cushions, plaids, candle holders, or other home accessories that are produced in a sustainable way. For example, you can also bring an animal head or photo frames made of cardboard into your home.
Cart Webshop
Recently, there is a new supplier of sustainable products: KarTent. KarTent is a Dutch start-up based in Amsterdam. We make cardboard festival tents, to counteract the enormous waste piles (plastic) that are left behind at festival campsites. We do this with our own circular vision. After use at the festivals, the KarTents are returned to our warehouse and given a second life in the form of completely circular cardboard products.
